Research and Development
NTN's diversified research covers every level of business activity from basic building blocks to real world applications
NTN began as a bearing manufacturer. Since our founding in 1918, we have conducted research into new materials including functional resins and ceramics. From there we conducted research into the measurement technology that is indispensable to the precision processing that produces bearings, in addition to improving the work of grinding and lubricating materials surfaces.
We have also utilized our basic research results and expertise gained through the years to evolve from a manufacturer of bearings to advanced precision processing equipment.
In addition, we are conducting research and developing production facilities to create a wide range of precision processing equipment at home and abroad.
NTN spirit of development tackling new challenges as a leading manufacturer
NTN's laboratories are active in R&D in every sector. These laboratories do more than merely exchange information and form ties with other divisions. They actively go outside the company to meet and talk with R&D divisions of customers and conduct joint research with universities.
For example, we have solved problems by using needle bearings in extremely narrow spaces where conventional ball bearings cannot be used. And we have affirmed our position as one of the leading manufacturers of needle bearings. We are also involved with new product development and trials conducted by customers, and resolutely meet new challenges in a wide range of sectors, including automobiles, computers, medical equipment, aerospace, and industrial robots.
Continually developing new technology in new sectors... Original methods drawing intense interest
NTN is a precision device manufacturer that continually develops new products in new sectors.
We have developed a bearing with a hydrodynamic groove in the surface of the bearing's inner diameter. The hydrodynamic bearing, with metallic powder compressed and sintered, is already being mass-produced for the polygon scanner motor on laser beam printers.
The expertise acquired in developing this product is also finding application in the spindle motor for hard disc drives - our next development target. It was commercialized as the "Hydrodynamic BEARPHITE Unit" (patent pending).
This product is compact and features high rotation accuracy. It is perfectly suited for use with information equipment because it is quieter than ball bearings. As a result, companies from many different sectors are placing orders.
